Keyboard garters
Kovacsics Robert
While I didn’t design the DO52Pro keyboard, I did cobble together the system for attaching it to my thighs. I call it the “keyboard garters”, which is as far as I can ascertain, the first use of this term. I like it, both because it sounds queer (and looks queer too), and even pretty. Which is not often the case with geeky tools. Especially when used with skirts. I’ve even added a clip to hold up programming socks.
I mostly use the keyboard while sitting down, it ends up around the right place.
It is reasonably comfortable to use while standing on the train, in case there is only standing space. The keyboards sit higher up on my leg in this case.
And it is easy to detach from my legs, if needed. That’s Lucy, the Gleam mascot sticker.
The construction is simple, I bought a 3 in 1 part money clip (eBay), cut it in half in the middle, so I got two equal folded back pieces of metal. Though two single money clips could work, as well as other folded sheet metals. Then drilled a hole in it and the keyboard, and joined it using screws.
For now I have just used a bit of Kapton tape (after using a bit of blue tack to remove the sharp edges), to insulate it from the PCB. N.b. in the future I would go with riveting for less sticking out.
The thigh straps are actually women’s thigh holsters (AliExpress) – more aesthetic than men’s, and less militaristic – also attached to my belt using some polypropylene string and nylon belt clips.
